Review by Benny Di Cicco, 2010-08-29

for an old movie it looks pretty good, but a bit too much video noise

Blu ray a mixed bag

Review by Johnny Utah, 2010-08-18

This is only a review for the blu-ray, since there are plenty of reviews for the movie itself. I was slightly disappointed by the blu-ray, but your reaction to it will probably depend on what you are looking for. If you want a faithful recreation of how the movie was in theaters, then this would be good for you. If you are like me and are looking for blu-rays to be a noticeable improvement over DVDs, then you will probably be disappointed.

There are a number of scenes in this movie where there is a hazy look (like when Robert goes out for his morning ride chopping watermelons), and those still remain in the blu-ray. Those scenes look even more out of place when compared to the hi def look of the rest of the movie. Again, this comes down to whether you really want "what the director intended" or a cleaned up version of the film. I just found these scenes and certain re-recorded dialogue scenes sorely out of place in a hi def movie. I also found some of the normal dialogue hard to hear at times, so it seemed like overall the soundtrack was a bit uneven.

I didn't compare it back to back with the standard DVD, but for me the mix of intentionally hazy scenes/muffled dialogue and hi def scenes and audio resulted in an uneven final product.

Slightly disappointing

Review by Teemacs, 2010-07-04

I wanted to like this film. After all, the story of the 54th Massachusetts, the first black regiment in the Union Army and its courageous assault on the formidable defence works of Fort Wagner, is a great one and a major step forward for the blacks of the USA. However, I found the whole thing to be rather bloodless and, well, lacking fire in its belly. I have no idea what the real Col. Shaw was like, but I can't imagine the character as played by Matthew Broderick being terribly inspirational. I thought it was overall a poor acting performance, redeemed slightly at the end as he confronts the likelihood of his death in the assault on Fort Wagner. Morgan Freeman plays a version of his wise old uncle act and even the usually excellent Denzel Washington I found not particularly impressive.

The best bit is the assault on Fort Wagner, which is very well done, and accompanied by a splendid score from James Horner (inspired at least in part by Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana"). Even there it has a disappointing, abrupt ending, leaving the viewer to puzzle what happened next (there is no mention of the retreat, or of the wounded sergeant who brought back the flag and was to be the first black man to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor).

I realise that the characters for such a film have to be largely fictitious, or composites of real characters, but I'm sure it could have been better done. So, while not a bad film, I found it a somewhat disappointing one that fell short of what it might have been.

A must have for anyone interested in the Civil War

Review by Michael Bartschi, 2010-06-11

This film springs to glorious life in Blu-Ray. It tells to true story of the all black volunteer army regiment during the Civil War and their heroic sacrifices. If you have any interest in the Civil War buy this movie.

Great Movie

Review by M. Buirge, 2010-04-17

This is a very entertaining film. I think the negative reviewers should realize that that most people don't go to movies for a history lesson but to be entertained. If you want to see a really good movie then buy it, if you want a history lesson then goto the library.
